Petrolia wants to brown bag it.
Council plans to end the use of plastic bags to bring leaves to the compost site. The move comes the same week the federal government vowed to ban single-use plastics – including plastic grocery bags – by 2021 to help reduce the amount of plastics making it to Canada’s waterways.
Resident Norm Sutherland brought the idea to Petrolia council earlier this spring saying hundreds of bags were simply being thrown out after people brought their leaves to the Progress Drive compost depot.
Councillor Ross O’Hara agreed saying he thought going green by using compostable paper bags was a better option.
Council agreed with the move. It will hold a public meeting June 24 at 5 pm to hear from residents.
