Former Petrolia councillor remembered for his kindness

May 10, 2024

Former Petrolia Councillor Don Welten has passed away.

Welten served one term on Petrolia council from 2018 to 2022 but he had a deep knowledge of the inner workings of municipal government. He was the chief building official in the former Bosanquet Township and Lambton Shores.

In his retirement, Welten not only served on council, he served on a number of Petrolia committees and served as a teacher and board member at New Life Assembly Church.

A news release from the town announcing his passing and the lowering of the flag at town hall says “Known for his kindness, considerate nature and dedication to his community, Mr. Welten will be missed.”

It was a thought echoed in his obituary. “A man of many talents, Don was a renowned renovator and builder who could create anything he set his mind to. He had a great sense of humour and a kind, considerate nature that endeared him to all who knew him,” wrote the family.

A celebration of life for the 81 year-old will be held June 7.
