App helps locate missing hiker in Pinery Park
January 12, 2021
Smart phone technology helped Lambton OPP find a lost hiker in Pinery Provincial Park.
OPP were called to the park in Lambton Shores Jan. 7 around 5 pm, just as it was getting dark. A lone hiker was turned around in the 38 kilometers of trails in the 25 square kilometer park and could not find her way out.
Members of the OPP Communications Center in London suggested the hiker download an app called What3Words on her cell. She provided the three words she saw on her screen to the communications center and that helped pinpoint her location to within three square meters.
The officers on the ground were able to quickly locate the hiker.
