Warwick wants Canada Post to drop post office box numbers
February 15, 2023
Warwick Township is formally asking Canada Post to look at using civic addresses on mail in the community.
Warwick is one of only two communities left in southern Ontario which requires post office boxes on any mail. But it causes problems with package deliveries, particularly in Watford. Most companies won’t deliver to a post office box.
“Canada Post assigns mailing/postal address for the purposes of mail delivery. The municipality assigns civic (911) address to identify a physical location. In the case of Watford’s mail delivery, the required Canada post mailing/postal address does not match the civic address,” writes CAO Amanda Gubbels in a report to council.
“Residents in Watford would still obtain their mail at their assigned PO Box, but the PO Box number would not be included on mail,” she added saying then parcel delivery would be completed.
Monday, council voted to formally ask Canada Post to consider civic addresses in Watford so the company can examine the idea.
