Jets spoil the Killer Bees’ party with the first win of the series

March 15, 2025

Mike Mandarelli’s overtime goal and 44 saves by Evan Debrower led the upstart Strathroy Jets to a 4-3 over the Killer Bees in game one of their best-of-seven Ontario Super Hockey League semi-final in Alvinston on Friday night.

Brennan Feasey, with his first of two goals on the night, was the only Alvinston shooter to beat Debrower in the first period as the home team outshot the Jets, 20-6.

Feasey and Carson Perry scored 36 seconds apart early in the second period to increase Alvinston’s lead to 3-0, but goals by Jamie MacQueen and Dave Vergeer cut the gap to 3-2 after 40 minutes. Blake Griffiths sent the game to extra time with the equalizer with just under four minutes to play in regulation time.

Debrower made 44 saves as the Bees outshot Strathroy, 47-29. Joseph Raaymakers took the loss.

It was Alvinston’s first playoff loss after sweeping Dunnville in the first round. Strathroy’s postseason record is now 5-1 after upsetting second seeded Elora in five games in the opening round.

The Jets will host game two on Friday, March 21 at the Gemini Sportsplex at 7:30 and game three is set for the Brooke Alvinston Inwood Community Complex on Saturday, March 22 at 6:45.
