Oil Springs approves sidewalk improvements

The Independent
Oil Springs council is shuffling its priorities for capital projects.
Public Works Superintendent Chris Den Boer brought to council’s attention on Aug. 5 that there is 337 feet of curb, which is not worth saving near the cenotaph on Oil Springs Line.
He came armed with a quote for the work for seven different spots which need to be replaced. Along with the curb, Den Boer said the sidewalk should be replaced in these locations as well.
Oil Springs Mayor Ian Veen at first questioned where the village would get the money to complete this work this summer.
It was decided to hold off replacing guardrails and markers on the Gypsy Flats Road Bridge this year, as planned so the village can pay for the curb and sidewalk work.
The Gypsy Flats Road bridgework was estimated to cost $90,000, while the sidewalk and curb work will be in the range of $30,000.
Council will look to have to the bridgework completed in 2026.
The new curbs and sidewalks are not the only work slated for the rest of the summer. Work was being completed to do road resurfacing on Oil Springs Line between the municipal office and the bridge in August for a cost of $130,000.
