BRIEFLY: OBAs continue, throwing thrill for Smith

Corunna finished in the top four of the Senior B OBA tournament in Leamington with a 3-2 record after losing a 10-9 decision to Mitchell in its final game. And, Port Lambton was 1-2 at the C tournament in Port Hope. After beating Tillsonburg in its opener, the Pirates lost a pair of one-run decisions and were eliminated.

Wyoming, Corunna and Port Lambton will represent the area this weekend at the 13U OBA tournament in Petrolia and Wyoming.  Port Lambton opens on Friday morning at 10 a.m. against Lucan-Ilderton at Centennial Park in Wyoming. Corunna goes up against LaSalle at 10:30 a.m. at Wyoming’s Canton Park and the host Wyoming team plays Saugeen Shores in its opener on Friday at Centennial Park at 1 p.m.  The eight-team tournament that also includes Friday games at Kerr Park in Petrolia continues through Sunday.

The Camlachie Cougars and Corunna Giants won Central Lambton fastball titles on the weekend. The Cougars beat Wyoming in the under-11 final and the Giants needed extra innings to wrestle the under-15 banner away from the Enniskillen Express.

The Lambton College women’s softball team opens its exhibition schedule on Wednesday (Aug. 27) at Germain Park in Sarnia. The doubleheader against Kitchener’s Conestoga College begins at 6 p.m. The Lady Lions roster has several players on it from Central Lambton.

Steve Truman and Denise Sanders won the overall men and women’s club championship at Kingswell Glen in Petrolia on the weekend. Tayt Stonehouse and Brayer Vandenbergt won the junior and 13 and under championship while the flight champs were Charlie Pakalnis and Peter Catton.

Corunna’s Stephen Brown of the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club won the team trophy with Ontario at the Canadian Mid-Amateur golf tournament in North Vancouver last week. Ontario came from behind the beat Nova Scotia for the hardware. Individually, Brown, SGCC club mate Graham Bell and Marc Anderson of Arkona Fairways all missed the cut.

Quite a thrill for Duncan Smith and some of his Sarnia Athletics Southwest track club teammates.  Smith, the reigning OFSAA high school and national U18 javelin champion was invited to throw with a pair of his heroes in London Friday.

Olympic Decathlon champion and Olympic record holder Damian Warner and World Decathlon champion Pierce Lepage asked the Great Lakes athlete to throw javelin with them as they to prepare for the World Athletics championships in Tokyo. Smith won the exhibition with a throw of 58.91 metres, nearly two metres farther than Warner. It was the third best throw of Smith’s career.

Barrett Hands of Corunna and Team Ontario are gold medalists in men’s box lacrosse at the Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Ontario ran the table at the tournament with a perfect 7-0 record including an 11-5 win over Team BC in the final on Sunday.

Petrolia’s Jack Policelli was on the Rapid Avalanche summer hockey team that ended its season with a recent victory at a tournament in Brantford. The Sarnia team is coached by former Petrolia Squire Brandon Biggers.
