Old fashioned firefighting in Alvinston

Lambton College firefighting students were thrilled to get a ride in the old Alvinston fire truck Saturday.
They were in the community to take part in the Brooke Fire Service’s 130th Anniversary of the Alvinston station. Station Chief Ron McCabe organized the event.
The first department was formed in 1895 with the hall downtown for many years.
Aside from showcasing the Alvinston department’s history, McCabe also invited fire departments from across Lambton County to be part of a water ball tournament.
The Lambton firefighting students joined the fun and stuck around for the ride in the restored rig.
McCabe says when he first become a firefighter 34 years ago, fire departments would often hold large musters for friendly competitions and to share stories.
“We got together as neighboring departments and did this sort of stuff, just for fun, just to get together on a whole different level than when you’re at a call,” he says. “I’m hoping that the excitement I saw today with these the college students, that starts building this sort of thing back up again.”
