Sarnia-Lambton runners win high school cross country meets

Chase Capes, Tayvin Young and Lily Bressette all crossed the finish line first in their respective races at the Thrill on the Hill high school cross-country meet in Windsor on Wednesday.

Capes, from St. Patrick’s, won his senior boys’ 6K race by 32 seconds. Irish teammate Ryan Ladouceur was fourth, Paxton Burnie of Great Lakes placed fifth and Northern’s Alex Fortney was tenth.

In the girls’ senior race, Northern’s Bressette won her race by almost nine seconds over Avery Norland of St. Patrick’s. Olivia Somers of Northern was ninth.

Young won the junior boys’ 5K final beating out Viking teammate Liam Reynolds by three-and-a-half seconds. Daniel Diaz Quinones of the Irish was fourth.

Keala Pickard of St. Patrick’s was second in the junior girls’ 5K race with Irish teammate Ava White placing fifth and Ellyot Schoonjans of North Lambton finishing ninth.

In the novice division races, Carter Ewart of Northern and Jessie Janoska of Great Lakes were seventh and eighth respectively in the boys’ and girls’ finals.

The Lancers, Eagles fared well at the meet. Colton Peters of North Lambton had the best finish among athletes from LCCVI and North Lambton.

Peters, from North Lambton, was sixth in the junior boys’ race.  Eagles teammate Arie Roeland was

12th in the same race and LCCVI’s Benjamin Leystra placed 14th.

North Lambton running mates Ellyot Schoonjans and Skyla Willemse was ninth and 15th in the junior girls’ division, while NLSS’ AJ Huras was 11th in the novice boys’ race.  In the novice girls’ competition, Kenzie Maoriat of the Lancers and Arlee Roder of the Eagles were 13th and 14th respectively.

Heidi and Luke Shaw, both from LCCVI, rounded out those from the two county schools who finished in the top 25.  Heidi was 16th in the senior girls’ final and Luke was 23rd in the senior boys’ event.

The next scheduled race is the Springwater Invitational near Aylmer on Oct. 2.
