Lambton OPP say charges have been laid against a driver after an Anishinabek police officer was stabbed Saturday.
An OPP news release late Tuesday said the incident started with an attempted traffic stop Saturday morning around 10:25. The driver stabbed the officer while stopped on Middle Road and then fled the scene.
Acting Chief of the Anishinabek Police Service, Julie Craddock, in a statement posted on social media, said an officer “was seriously injured as a result of being slashed in the face by a suspect, who then barricaded themselves in a residence with a shotgun.”
Police ordered people shelter-in-place but the order was lifted by 11 am when the person was taken into custody.
The officer was treated and released.
“Miigwech to our Ontario Provincial Police partners who quickly deployed significant resources to assist our officer and to get the suspect into custody, and to EMS for their expert care and response,” she said.
“This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers our officers potentially encounter every time they don their uniform, often facing unpredictable situations,” said Craddock, thanking the officers for their service.
The driver, who has not been named, faces four charges including aggravated assault of a police officer, possession of a dangerous weapon and flight from police.
