St. Clair Township has given two more power projects the stamp of approval.

Several companies are trying to win contracts to provide 750 megawatts of energy for the province and each one needs the support of the municipality where it will be built.

The township has already given Atura Power a letter of support for its 500 megawatt Riverside Generating Station proposal which will produce electricity from natural gas.

Monday, council also approved a letter of support for the Greenfield Energy Centre’s proposal to produce 500 megawatts of power from natural gas near Courtright. The company says the “peaker” unit will provide “reliable, flexible capacity that complements renewable resources.”

The township will also pen a letter of support for the St. Clair Energy Centre’s project on Petrolia Line across from NOVA Chemicals.

It wants to produce 240 megawatts of power with natural gas.

After the approvals passed without comment, Mayor Jeff Agar said “This is great. There’s not a whole lot of work out there for the trades and all our gas-powered turbine plants are coming in big time,” he said. “I hope the IESO (the regulator choosing which projects will receive contracts) supports them all.

“And once again, I will say, I am hoping St. Clair Township will be the gas turbine capital of Ontario and I’ll be proud to have it.”
