Mooretown pool, fitness centre won’t reopen in September

More ice on Lake Huron than in the last 12 years
January 27, 2026
The Independent
Lake Huron is freezing up during the recent cold snap.
The Great Lakes Ice Tracker says 55.1 per cent of the lake is now covered in ice. That’s the highest level in 10 years.
Ice started forming in December and covered about 24 per cent of the lake by early January. A warm spell melted much of it quickly. But the last two weeks of our Canadian winter has accumulated the ice build up.
Since records have been kept, about 34 per of Lake Huron is covered in ice on average. The highest it has been is 79 per cent of the lake in 1977.
