Sports Briefs: Lady Lancers hockey team blank Ursuline 7-0

LCCVI has moved into first place in the South Division of LKSSAA girls’ high school hockey with a 7-0 win over Ursuline and a 5-0 triumph over previously unbeaten CKSS.

LCCVI is now 3-1-1 on the season.

In the North Division, North Lambton is 3-3 after a split last week.

Kylee Bork and Sammie Letkeman each had two goals to lead the Eagles over Northern, 4-2 and Great Lakes edged NLSS, 5-4.

Monday, Mooretown’s Camryn Leitch scored five times to lead Great Lakes over Northern, 7-2.

The Lady Lancers close out their schedule against Wallaceburg Thursday at Greenwood at 2:30.

In boys’ action, LCCVI improved to 3-3-1 with a 9-0 win over Great Lakes.

LCCVI’s final regular season game is against Northern at Clearwater Wednesday at 3:45.

Wallaceburg improved to 8-1 in senior girls’ AA volleyball action with a three-set win over LCCVI Feb. 5.

The Tartans won the decisive set, 15-13 to capture first place in the four-team league.

The Lancers finish third at 4-5.

Elsewhere, second place North Lambton improved to 6-3 with a 2-1 decision over John McGregor.

In junior AA action, LCCVI captured first place with a three-set in over Wallaceburg Feb. 5.

The Lancers won the regular season banner with a record of 8-1. Wallaceburg finished second at 7-2.

North Lambton beat John McGregor, 2-1 including a 17-15 win in the decisive set.

Playoffs begin Feb. 12 with North Lambton hosting LCCVI at 3:30 and Wallaceburg at home to John McGregor at 6:30.

In junior postseason action, also Thursday, LCCVI is home to John McGregor at 4 p.m. and North Lambton takes on Wallaceburg at 5.

Jamison Helps had 13 points and Brandon Lester added 12 to lead LCCVI to a 55-38 win over previously unbeaten John McGregor in senior boys’ basketball in Chatham Monday.

The Panthers win the regular season banner with a record of 5-1. The Lancers finish second at 4-2.

In junior action, LCCVI will finish second with a 5-3 record despite a 54-46 loss to John McGregor.

Xander Knapp led the Lancers with 17 points and North Lambton will finish third with a 3-5 mark beating Wallaceburg, 45-34 Monday. Mason Verhoeven led the Eagles with 16 points.

The Lancers and Eagles close out the regular season with a contest at the Forest high school gym this evening (Wed) at 5:30.

Stopping 66 of 70 shots last weekend in Oshawa and Brampton has earned Sarnia Sting goaltender Kale Osipenko Rookie of the Week honours in the Ontario Hockey League.

He stopped 42 of 45 shots in a 5-3 win against the Generals last Friday and had 24 saves in a 2-1 overtime win against the Steelheads Saturday.

Alvinston Ice Angel teams won gold and silver medals at the Skate Ontario Synchronized skating event in Oakville last weekend.

The elementary team won its division while the On the Edge adult team was second in its category.

Sarah Lecky won two gold medals at the recent Skate Ontario provincial series event in LaSalle, near Windsor.

Lecky, from the Petrolia and District Figure Skating Club, took first place in the Bronze division adult free skate and adult artistic competitions.

Meantime, Emily Arthur of the Brooke-Alvinston club also won gold in her Gold division women’s adult artistic event.

Petrolia Oilers squads went two-for-two in gold medal games at minor hockey tournaments on both sides of the border last weekend.

The under-15 4C squad won its division the Buffalo River Classic and the Petrolia under-9 squad won its championship in overtime at the Full Ice tournament in Aylmer.

The Sarnia Legionnaires set a new record for consecutive losses to start a junior “B” hockey season last week bowing 3-2 to Waterloo at Pat Stapleton Arena for the Legionnaires’ 40th straight loss.

Samantha St. Croix has signed a professional contract with the Halifax Tides of the women’s Northern Super League.

The Port Lambton goalkeeper joins after a standout season in university play at Western and semi-pro action with FC London of the Ontario Women’s Premier Division.

St. Croix attended Wallaceburg District Secondary School before moving on to the Mustangs.
