Major road projects less than expected

A couple of big road construction projects are getting the nod in Lambton County.
In St. Clair Township, councillors approved a $1.52 million contract for GIP Paving to fix Lambton Line.
Engineer Andrew Malpass says in his report to council Lambton Line between Pretty and Mandaumin Road is at the end of its life but that sections of the road could be rehabilitated by recycling the pavement in place with extra asphalt.
The cost for the project came in under budget by more than $350,000, prompting Councillor Brad Langstaff to muse whether he should take out a front-page ad in The Independent praising the staff for its work.
In Warwick Township, the cost of the first phase of the Churchill Line reconstruction have also come in under budget.
The township is working with Brooke-Alvinston to replace the road over the next five years. This year, the townships budgeted over $2 million for the project from Forest Line to Kingscourt Road.
Council awarded the project to All Season Excavating for $1.67 million.
Officials were cautious however, noting contractors are now contemplating fuel surcharges as gas prices rise, which could push the cost of the project up.
