Kash wins smoke-delayed Bourassa Memorial

Matthias Uwe Kask beat Sachiv Kumar two sets to one in the final of the third-annual Love All Justin Bourassa Memorial Tournament Monday.
Kask was ranked first and Kumar ranked second among the more than 40 competitors in the Ontario Tennis Association Men’s Open sanctioned event.
Kumar took the first set 6-3 before Kask came back taking the next two sets, 6-3 and 6-2 to take the victory.
Hailing from Toronto, Kask has just finished his sophomore year with the University of Arizona Wildcats Men’s Tennis team. He has been described by the University of Arizona as a rising junior player in the world and has also been active in the UTR Pro Tennis Tour.
Kumar has also just completed his sophomore year with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Badgers men’s tennis team. Coming from Novi, Michigan, he was ranked the top tennis player in Michigan and the 81st player nationally in the United States within the Class of 2024.
Organizers had planned to hold the finals Sunday, but matches were cancelled Thursday and Friday because of smoke drifting into the Sarnia area from forest fires in Northern Ontario.
The tournament held in memory of Justin Bourassa, a local tennis pro, who was tragically killed in 2021, has continued to grow attracting higher calibre competitors each year.
A silent auction held raised $4,000. The money will go to Love All, a non-profit endowment fund created in memory of Bourassa. The fund aims to grow youth tennis in the Sarnia-Lambton by providing financial support to young athletes who embody Bourassa’s values of dedication, inclusivity and passion for tennis.
