Petrolia connection to Canada’s Hlinka Gretzky Cup win

Hockey victories by Canadian teams against the U.S. have been scarce lately but Team Canada put an exclamation point on a decision against the Americans to capture gold at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup U18 hockey event in Edmonton last weekend.
The gold medalists scored three times in each of the first two periods in an 8-1 decision while outshooting Team USA, 45-17 overall.
Matthew Henderson, a first round OHL pick by Kingston in 2025, whose parents both attended LCCVI, was on the Canadian roster and although he didn’t register any points, played a regular shift in all five games for the championship squad.
London Knights prospect Cooper McAslan had an assist in the gold medal contest; his third points in five games for Team Canada.
Canada beat Switzerland, Slovakia and Sweden in the preliminary round before defeating Finland in the semi-finals.
The Americans were also perfect in the round robin and beat Slovakia in the other semi-final.
Mason Courville, the son of former Sting Larry Courville, made three appearances for Team USA. The Flint Firebirds goalie had a goals-against average of 2.14 and a .921 save percentage.
