Over $8 million in Illegal tobacco, nicotine pouches seized at Bluewater Bridge

Over $13.8 million of illegal tobacco products have been seized at southern Ontario border crossings – including the Bluewater Bridge – in August.
Canada Border Services Agency officers say the seizures were “significant quantities in commercial shipments” from the US.
Officials say the cash generated from the illegal tobacco trade is often used to support and expand other criminal activities.
At the Bluewater Bridge alone over 30,000 kilos of loose-leaf tobacco valued at $5.6 million was seized in two different stops in mid-August. Border agents also seized about 2,800 kilos of nicotine patches. They were valued at just under $3 million.
CBSA officials add since January, CBSA officers in the Southern Ontario Region have seized more than $52.2 million in tobacco and nicotine products.
