Plain to face off against Nahmabin in Aamjiwnaang election

Chris Plain has resigned as the Anishinabek Nation Grand Council deputy chief to try to run against Janelle Nahmabin in the vote for Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
Plain had served on Aamjiwnaang’s council for 19 years when he resigned in 2024 to take over the role of Deputy Grand Chief. Nahmabin was named the new chief when Plain stepped down and was acclaimed two months later to serve as chief until 2026.
Plain resigned last Monday saying; “I intend to seek the position of Chief in my home First Nation and, in doing so, offer my experience, energy, and commitment directly to the people and community that have shaped who I am.”
He called his work as Deputy Grand Chief “one of the greatest honours of my life.”
Aamjiwnaang’s election is Oct. 16.
Meantime, Leela Thomas has been re-elected as Chief of the Walpole Island First Nation in a vote last Saturday.
She garnered over 50 per cent of the vote in a field which included former Chief Dan Miskokomon.
The elections in Kettle and Stoney Point will be held Nov. 7.
