A St. Clair Township councillor is concerned about the timing of the reconstruction of the Lambton Line bridge near Becher.
Brad Langstaff pointed out Sept. 21 it will make life difficult for farmers heading to the DG Global mill in Becher.
The township is working on the bridge between West River Road and Kimball Road at the tail end of the construction season. Lambton Line is a main route for farmers bringing grain to the mill.
Langstaff says the construction could “cripple DG Global there.”
“Three quarters of their business is going to happen in the next two months,” he added.
Langstaff said he didn’t believe the township scheduled the work at that time on purpose.
Shortly after the meeting, the township gave some instructions about the construction zone.
“Farm equipment and grain haulers are encouraged to use Langstaff Line or Smith Line to Kimball Road to access the grain elevators,” officials said in a social media post. “Please do not use the Holt Line Bridge with tractors, wagons, or other heavy agricultural equipment.
“The bridge is not designed to accommodate these loads, and avoiding it is essential to protecting the structure and ensuring public safety.”
Langstaff asked that in the future staff puts “more thought and consideration” into scheduling decisions for construction, particularly around major businesses.
