Riding a lengthy winning streak, the Guelph Storm roll into Sarnia on Wednesday (Oct. 14) for their first game against the Sting this season.

After losing its first two games with many players still away at NHL camps, the 2027 Memorial Cup hosts have now won six straight games outscoring their opponents, 34-10.

The Sting will be without captain Alessandro Di Iorio for Wednesday night’s contest. The Columbus Blue Jackets prospect popped up on the OHL injury report Tuesday with a lower-body injury. He listed as day-to-day.

Sarnia will also be without assistant coach Mason Baptista who was suspended for two games after receiving a game misconduct for unsportsmanlike conduct in the final moments of the Sting’s 6-4 loss in Flint Saturday.

The Sting rallied from a 5-2 deficit in that game to cut the gap to 5-4 before the Firebirds sealed the deal with a late empty net tally.

Easton Walos scored twice for Sarnia. Parker Holmes and Tyler Challenger each had a goal and an assist.

Coming off back-to-back shutouts against Oshawa, the Firebirds scored in the opening minute to snap Ivan Tkach-Tkachenko’s shutout streak at 143:04 dating back to a relief appearance for the Sting against the Colts in Barrie on Oct. 3.

The Russian rookie wound up with 34 saves.

Friday night at home, Tkach-Tkachenko turned aside 35 shots in a 4-0 win over the Generals to become just the second member of the Sting to record consecutive shutouts. The other was Justin Fazio in Nov. 2015.

Sarnia is home to Saginaw on Friday and goes up against the Spirit in Michigan on Saturday.
