After losing to Ursuline College in a tight LKSSAA final last season, LCCVI had something to prove.

“We came into this season with a chip on shoulder.” said Lancers coach Brett Brydges. “We wanted to get over the hump and get to SWOSSAA.”

That’s exactly what LCCVI did, getting a 10-2 win over North Lambton in the LKSSAA baseball final at Morrison Field in Petrolia Thursday afternoon.

Brydges says that his team was able to take some lessons from last year into this game.

“Understanding that we have to stay within ourselves and trust everybody in the lineup. We have a very deep team and I think that’s what you need to win a championship. That’s the mentality that we went into this season (with)…. everyone in our lineup can get it done and if we trust everybody and stay within ourselves and stay composed, we’re a tough ball club to beat.”

The Lancers and Eagles traded runs in the first three innings before LCCVI started to blow the game open.

Mason Tweedy put the Lancers ahead by one in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout. Jamison Helps extended their lead to 4-1 with a two-run single.

LCCVI played some small ball in the fifth inning, getting runs on a balk and a double steal, which caused some drama.

The runner was called safe at second base which drew the ire of the North Lambton players. The Eagles pitcher exchanged a few choice words with the umpire and was promptly ejected.

LCCVI tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth, capped off by a three-run double into the left-center gap.

The Lancers move on to the SWOSSAA final, which takes place in the Windsor area on May 25, 2027.

Brydges says the LCCVI squad will play different sports in the winter but will reconvene in the spring to prepare for their SWOSSAA matchup.

“Once it starts getting nice out… we’ll be out here working hard and hopefully we can kind of piece things back together and be ready to go come spring.”
