Petrolia man critically injured during evening standoff

October 27, 2020

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is probing an incident in Petrolia where a 40 year old Petrolia man was critically injured.

Police were called to a home in Petrolia around 7:30 pm last night for a man in mental distress according to the SIU news release. Police went to the back of the property and secured the area.

At 10:45 pm, the OPP’s Emergency Response team went into the rear of the property and found the man with a gunshot wound.

He was transported to hospital where the SIU says he’s in critical condition.

“Based on the preliminary information, the gunshot wound is believed to have been self-inflicted,” says the civilian agency which investigates reports involving police where there has been death or series injury in a news release.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case. The SIU’s mandate is to figure out whether an officer has committed a criminal offence. Investigators can lay criminal charges against an officer if they find evidence. They can also close the file without charges being laid.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
