February 17, 2022
Chatham-Kent Fire officials say a third person has died in a fire in Wallaceburg.
Firefighters were called to Elgin Street around 2 am. Crews from Chatham and Wallaceburg responded and were on the scene in minutes.
Fire Chief Chris Case says the building – the former home of former MPP Arthur St. Clair Gordon which is a heritage building – was divided into apartments.
Firefighters went into the burning building and found two people inside. One person was found in a lower apartment, another in an upper apartment. One man was pronounced dead at the scene, a woman was brought to hospital where she was pronounced dead.
This morning, Case told reporters one resident of the apartment building was unaccounted for. This afternoon, officials announced a third person had been found in the basement.
Firefighters are still on the scene and the Chatham-Kent Fire Prevention Team and the Office of the Fire Marshal are investigating.
