A pair of third period goals and steady play from goalie Sean Shanahan lifted the LCCVI Lancers to a 2-0 win over the Belle River Nobles in the SWOSSAA Finals at Greenwood Arena in Petrolia Wednesday afternoon.
Both teams came out energized and were throwing their weight around in the opening frame. LCCVI got two chances on the power play but were unable to convert on either chance.
Belle River’s best chance of the game came early in the second when they wired a shot past Shanahan off the post.
LCCVI dominated the rest of the period, getting their best chances midway through the frame but were still unable to shovel one past the Nobles’ goaltender.
In the third, the Lancers would break through when Tyler McGrail went in on a partial breakaway and put a backhander past the outstretched glove of the Belle River netminder. The icebreaker came with just under nine minutes to go with assists going to Rhett Joy and Jack Morningstar.
Brayden Kominek would give LCCVI some insurance, roofing a shot gloveside to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead with just over four minutes to go. Craig Richardson picked up the lone assist on Kominek’s marker.
LCCVI goalie Sean Shanahan would shut it down from there, stopping 11 shots in the third to pick up a 21 save shutout.
The Lancers advance to the OFSAA A/AA championships in St. Catherines from March 21-23.
