Petrolia hockey coach assaulted after U11 game

March 6, 2025

The Independent

Petrolia Minor Hockey Association officials are speaking out after an assault of a coach.

PMHA President Mike Edgar said one of the minor hockey coaches was assaulted while leaving a game Tuesday. There was only one game that evening – a penalty-filled U11 game against South Huron in the Shamrock Hockey League in Centralia. The stats show there were 12 penalties during the game – 11 in the third period including a game misconduct for disrespectful and abusive behaviour against a Petrolia player.

Edgar says the coach wasn’t seriously hurt. And he says none of the players were involved but appears a “fan” was.

PMHA, the Ontario Minor Hockey Association and the OPP are investigating the incident.

The association took to social media to denounce the incident.

“This behaviour is absolutely unacceptable, and we want to make it clear that PMHA does not condone violence in any form,” the statement said.

“We expect their association to take appropriate action regarding these parents to ensure this type of behaviour is addressed appropriately. Our association stands firmly against any action that negatively impacts our volunteers and players. The safety and well-being of our coaches and players is our top priority.”

The statement went on to say the association believes the sports community should be a respectful place adding the safety of the PMHA volunteers is paramount. “We remain committed to ensuring a safe and positive environment for all involved.”

Edgar expects after the investigation is complete there may be some changes made quickly. “Once safety is pulled into the picture I think there may be things we talk about in the next week to implement to make sure we end the season in a safe manner.”
