Sarnia’s mayor is changing his mind about removing US flags from city property.
Mike Bradley said the city should not fly the nation’s flag since US President Donald Trump’s government “is doing everything possible to jeopardize Canada economically and socially and tries to make it the 51st state.”
Bradley was to ask council Monday to approve the removal of all US flags on municipal property and ask the Lambton Area Water Supply System also take down the US flags near the international border crossing at the Bluewater Bridge.
In a letter to council, Bradley said the Prime Minister and US President announced “comprehensive negotiations about a new economic and security relationship immediately following the election” and as “a sign of goodwill” he was withdrawing his request “pending the outcome of those talks.”
Meantime, Sarnia City/Councillor Bill Dennis, who opposed the move, is asking people to come to the Bluewater Bridge for a “Friendship Flag Wave’ event. It’s billed as a way show friendship to the US neighbours during the tariff dispute with the US. It’s at noon.
