The Petrolia Community Foundation has given a boost to six local charities, doling out over $10,000.
The foundation’s Irene Clark appeared at the March 24 Petrolia council meeting to present the cheques to a number of groups.
Lambton Literacy received a $2,000 grant for supplies for their programs.
The Lambton Young Theatre Players received $1,500. Linda Smith said the money would be used to provide busing for elementary school children to the troupe’s May performance. The cost of busing, Smith said, often stops schools from attending the event.
The Petrolia Community Refrigerator received $2,000. Volunteer Les Whiting said the food program is needed more than ever.
“Just a few years ago, one in five Canadians were food insecure. Unfortunately, today, it is now one in four. So going the wrong way,” he said.
Between 45 and 50 volunteers run the 24 hour-a-day operation which Whiting said serves about 150 people on a regular basis. The money provided will help buy food.
The Petrolia/Enniskillen Agricultural Society received a $2,000 grant. Greg Lee said the money would be used to help renovate the society’s building near the arena so it can host agricultural displays.
The Petrolia Skating Club received a $1,000 grant.
The Petrolia Y also received a $1,5000 grant which will be used to buy small appliances to improve the food offerings at the monthly meetings for the Boomers Club.
