Jakob Knowles kicked out 45 shots and six different players hit the back of the net as the Petrolia Squires beat Tavistock, 6-1 to open its new season in the Ontario Elite Hockey League on Friday night at Greenwood.

The Royals outshot the home team, 46-37 including peppering Knowles with 21 shots in the final frame. For his effort, Knowles was named the player of the game.

Evan Wammes, Josh Barraclough, TJ Harris, Adam Craievich, Daniel Gibson and Tyler Ryan scored the Squires. Curtis Helps had three assists while Zach VanEyk and Wil O’Leary-Dilosa both contributed two assists.

Harris was named captain of the Squires on Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first period in the opener, Petrolia scored three times in the second period to take a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes. The Royals cut the gap to 3-1 in the final frame before the Squires scored three unanswered goals to skate away with the two points in the standings.

Petrolia is home to Milverton on Friday and visits Delhi Saturday.
