Atura won’t need Impact Assessment for Riverside power plant

November 24, 2025

Heather Wright/The Independent

The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada says Atura’s natural gas powered electricity plant can move forward.

The subsidiary of Ontario Power Generation hopes to build a 500 megawatt power plant on the former site of the Lambton Generating Station. It’s applied to the Independent Electricity Supply Operator for a contract. But projects like this are reviewed by the Impact Assessment Agency.

The Riverside projects drew many comments, from residents glad to see the project being developed, to environmentalists who say natural gas powered electricity plans do more harm than good.

But the IAAC was most concerned about possible impacts to the areas First Nation communities. Aamjiwnaang  appealed for a full assessment, saying the plant will add to the cumulative effect of pollution coming from the Chemical Valley.

Monday, the IAAC, said a full Impact Assessment was not necessary since concerns about pollution and Indigenous consultation can be covered by existing legislation.
