Walpole Island man dead after shooting New Years Day

One person is dead and another is in custody after a shooting on Walpole Island
Walpole Island Police and the OPP were called to a home on Squirrel Island Road – a remote path near the St. Clair River – around 8 am Jan. 1 for a disturbance involving a firearm.
Police found a person with gunshot wounds when they arrived.
The victim, a 29-year-old from Walpole Island First Nation, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police took one person into custody without incident.
The person is in custody and will be in court in Sarnia Wednesday. Police have not said what charge has been laid in the death.
The OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, Walpole Island Police and the OPP’s Crime Unit along with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service continue the investigation.
Police say there is no additional threat to public safety.
