February 10, 2026

The Independent

Tire tracks in the snow have led to drug charges after a man was arrested on St. Anne Island in the Bkejwanong Territory.

Members of the Walpole Island Police Service were on patrol Feb. 9 around 10:30 am when they spotted what appeared to be tire tracks crossing the Johnson Channel to St. Anne Island. Officers were worried about the well-being of the driver and went to look.

Walpole Island police, resource protection officers and Lambton OPP found a vehicle that was in the ditch on the island but the driver was not to be found.

Around 2:30 pm, police and resource protection officers found a man walking along the shoreline of St. Anne Island. A quick check found he was wanted on an outstanding warrant with Lambton OPP.

Police have charged Edward Sands, 38, of the Walpole Island First Nation with 12 counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition, contrary to prohibition orders, unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking.
