Legionnaires hire GM and coach, have formal affiliation with Sting

May 4, 2026

The Independent

The Sarnia Legionnaires have a new GM and Head Coach and a formal affiliation with the OHL’s Sarnia Sting.

In a news release Sunday, President Theo Bet said Tate Philips will be the new general manager and director of hockey operations while Ryan Foster will be head coach.

Foster most recently has been the coach of the U16 Elgin Bombers in the Ontario Rep Hockey League. The Brampton native also has 12 years of coaching experience in professional leagues in Austria and Sweden.

Philips most recently was the GM of the Coburg Cougars of the Ontario Junior Hockey League which had a record of 9-44-2-0 this season.

Bets said the pair’s “dynamic resumes reflect a shared commitment to developing elite-level players and fostering a culture focused on advancement to the next level, including opportunities in the Ontario Hockey League and U Sports/NCAA.”

The Legionnaires – which did not win a game in the 25-26 season – have also announced a “working affiliation” with the Sarnia Sting.

Sarnia Sting Owner, Mark Guy says the idea of an affiliation between the clubs has been a long time coming.

“Hockey working together in an infrastructure to produce and move kids on in the hockey pathway is something we strongly believe in,” said Guy in a news release.

The Legionnaires host training camp in Mooretown June 6 and 7.
