Corunna captures Western Counties Senior ball title

After an opening night one-run loss to the host Wyoming Cattlebarons, the Corunna Giants rattled off three straight wins to capture the Western Counties Senior baseball championship tournament for the 2026 season.

Corunna downed Port Lambton, 11-1 in the final at Canton Park on Sunday afternoon.

Nolan Nicholson of the Giants was chosen as tournament MVP with six hits, including a home run, six runs scored and five RBI over the course of the weekend.

Corunna advanced to the final with a 9-7 win over the defending champion Cattlebarons in the semi-finals earlier in the day. Masen Flett had three hits, an RBI and two runs scored for the winners. Warren Boersma had four hits, three RBI and a run scored for the Barons.

After beating Petrolia, 13-7 in the play-in game on Saturday evening, the Pirates punched its ticket to the championship game with a 5-0 win over Dresden in the other semi-final on Sunday.

Fresh off his national and provincial championships with Windsor and Port Lambton last weekend, Will Greer punched out 11 in 5.2 inning for the Pirates. Justin Cook went the distance for the Bulls and took the loss despite a 13-strikeout performance.

The teams are now preparing for season-ending OBA tournaments Aug. 28-30.

Wyoming is play in the Senior AA bracket in Kincardine. Corunna is hosting the Senior B event and Port Lambton is participating too. Petrolia and Dresden are both traveling to Port Hope for the Senior C tournament.

Chatham, who did not participate in the league playoff tournament is heading to the OBA A tournament in Thorold.
