The OPP won’t be setting up shop in Oil Springs.
The suggestion by the Village of Oil Springs council to use the Youth Centre has been turned down by the Lambton OPP.
The OPP were looking for a location for a remote workspace within either Oil Springs or the townships of Enniskillen or Dawn-Euphemia. It approached each municipality for suggestions.
Oil Springs Clerk-Treasurer Jennifer Anderson reported to council on Aug. 4 that she had met with Lambton OPP Operational Support Sergeant Michael Marsh at the youth centre.
“They said it just won’t work,” said Anderson. “They want a room that locks.”
The OPP was looking to store some of its equipment at the remote site. A more suitable site was found within Dawn-Euphemia.
The OPP hopes the presence of the remote workspace can reduce response times, increase visibility of the police and enhance community safety and deter crime.
These workstations would not be staffed continuously, as they would be used on an as needed basis, but local leader hoped it would mean an increased presence in Oil Springs.
