Oil Springs’ auditor says the village has to figure out if there is hazardous materials in the five buildings the municipality owns.

The request to complete the work by the 2027 financial office was brought to council Aug. 4, but wasn’t welcomed.

Mayor Ian Veen suggested deferring the request to the municipality’s next budget saying the village had “already spent most of our budget now.”

Clerk-Treasurer Jennifer Anderson told council the assessment has been deferred by council before.

“There is a reason we put it off,” said Veen. “It’s like $23,000.”

The report determines the cost of abatement of things such as asbestos, lead, silica and mercury. This will better reflect each building’s total liability. Municipalities are required to keep records of all asbestos containing materials in public buildings.

It was deferred to council’s next meeting.
