Sarnia Police are pointing to the conviction of a former Sarnia Observer sports reporter to remind victims of sexual assault it is never too late to call police.

Sept. 18, Miller, who now lives in Penticton, BC, was found guilty of four counts of sexual interference and one count of invitation to sexual touching. The convictions stem from his involvement as a youth basketball coach in Sarnia in the 80s and 90s. He’ll be sentenced Nov. 19.

In a news release, Sarnia police say the case can bring up memories of past experiences adding at the time of a sexual assault, a victim may not make a report for a variety of reasons choosing to come forward later, which is what occurred in the Miller case.

“There is no time limit on reporting a sexual assault,” said Acting Insp. Kent Jamieson in a news release. “We understand that many survivors need significant time before feeling ready to share their experience with police.

“Our specially trained investigators use a trauma-informed approach and are committed to treating every person who comes forward with dignity, respect, and compassion. Whether the assault occurred days ago or decades ago, every report will be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.”
