Dawn-Euphemia Township officials are worried what the cost of diesel fuel will do to their budgets.

Diesel fuel is used in graders and snow plows. The war in Iran has pushed the price up from about $1.40 to $1.65 per litre in the summer of 2025.

Oct. 6, the price was $2.46.9 per litre, down slightly from its high point of $2.68.9 in mid-September.

Township council was review its Winter Roads plan Oct. 5 when the subject came up.

“Is the price of diesel being extremely challenging to hold the line?” asked Councillor Jason Meyer. “If we have a severely bad December, I know, five trucks could potentially drink $20,000 worth of fuel a week if there’s some major snow events.

“Is that going to be an issue for the budget?” Meyer asked adding the instability of diesel prices will make the 2027 budget difficult.

Mayor Al Broad agreed the cost of fuel is a huge issue.

“We know our single biggest expense is our roads, and we know everything to do with roads generally involve diesel fuel. Whether it’s a gravel being brought in, or asphalt, or anything that we’re doing, it’s involved diesel fuels,” he said.

But Broad says the municipality will just have to find the money to pay the bill.

“We know the (roadside weed) spraying didn’t get done, so there should be some savings there… if we need to, we’ll put it towards that.”
