What has been a colourful and sometimes divisive election campaign comes to an end tonight in Sarnia.

The polls have now closed and insiders expect it could be a long night of counting in the city as three people try to unseat incumbent mayor Mike Bradley in the 2026 municipal election.

Bill Dennis, a two-time councillor and former real estate broker who declared his intentions to run in 2023, Carrie McEachran, a political newcomer who is on leave from her position as the CEO of the Chamber of Commerce and first-time politician and businessman Scott Molson, are all trying to claim the chair which has been Bradley’s since 1988.

The campaign has had may twists and turns including the withdrawal of candidate George Stanko – his name was still on the ballot – and some colourful debates where Dennis, most recently, suggested acclaimed mayors from Lambton county should have no say in Sarnia’s planning decision when they come to county council for approval.

There are more than 40 people running for the eight council seats – four city council and four city-county councillor roles. Incumbents Brian White, Anne Marie Gillis, Adam Kilner, George Vandenberg, Terry Burrell and Chrissy McRoberts are all running again. There are also some former councillors looking to return among the crowded ballot including Margaret Bird, Andy Bruziewicz, and Mike Stark.

The city has a combination of online and in person voting, including paper ballots at 11 different polling stations.

It’s not clear when the full results will be available, however the online vote could be ready before 9 pm.
