Petrolia Sharecrows bring in almost 300 pounds of food

The Lambton Central Petrolia Optimist Club held its inaugural Sharecrow Community Day Drive Through Food Drive on Sunday afternoon.

People were encouraged to drop off non-perishable goods and donations at Kerr Park in Petrolia and at Sharecrows around the community.

Lambton Central Petrolia Optimist Club Treasurer Carol Watt brought the idea to the club. Sharecrows events are held in other communities like Grand Bend to raise awareness of local food insecurity and gather donations.

The Sharecrows food drive had businesses and individuals build a Sharecrow display from Oct. 20-31. A map was available so people who see each of the displays to drop non-perishable goods into the treat bins along the way. Sunday those sponsors dropped off those donations at Kerr Park, along with any other individual who had not yet donated.

By the end of the afternoon, 294 pounds of food was donated and will be split evenly between the Petrolia Food Bank and the Petrolia Community Refrigerator. It takes a pound of food or a $4 donation to provide an adult meal.
