A 34-year-old Walpole Island man’s to cash his own cheques at an ATM at the Toronto-Dominion Bank in Wallaceburg landed him in jail. 

Brandon Day was sentenced to 90 days in jail after pleading guilty to two counts of fraud in Sarnia court on recently. He has 45 days left to serve, since he has sat in jail for 30 days waiting for his sentence. This pre-sentence custody has been enhanced to 45 days.  

Day wrote himself two cheques to himself and tried to deposit them at an automated teller on Dec. 27, 2020 and Jan. 3, 2021. No money was stolen as the bank held the funds until the cheques were verified. The cheques were made out for $2,850 and $1,700. 

A set of cheques were stolen from a vehicle on Walpole Island on December 17, 2020. Another set of cheques were stolen during a break-in at a home in Enniskillen Township around the same time.

Defence Lawyer Robert McFadden called Day’s plan “doomed to fail,” as this was an attempt to get some drugs. 

He will also be on probation for one year with one of the conditions is to attend counseling and rehabilitation for his addiction. “You have a significant problem that is impacting every aspect of your life,” said Justice Krista Leszczynski.

Petrolia splash pad almost ready
