Sports Briefs: Oil Springs Stephenson gets OT winner for Point Edward Pacers

Jack Stephenson scored twice, including the game-winning goal in overtime, to lead the Point Edward Pacers to an 8-7 OLA Junior B lacrosse victory in Owen Sound last week.

Stephenson, a rookie from Oil Springs, has points in nine of his last 11 games dating back a month.

Meantime, Watford’s Ryan Bork registered five points in three games with the Pacers last week. He has points in four of his last
five games, including his first two goals of the season in the game against Owen Sound.

The Pacers close out the regular season at home against London on Friday before taking the trek to Orangeville to go against the Northmen on Saturday.

Local golfers are playing a different type of Catch the Ace on area courses these days.

Warmer weather has created a bevy of holes-in-one in the region.

Arkona Fairways has had a couple of aces over the past few days with both Graham Pickett and Dan Thomas being presented with the prestigious flag. Thomas turned the trick on the 272-yard 14th hole with his driver on Tuesday morning.

Luke Shaw, Don Dukelow, Mason Pomoransky and Vic Matias were also the talk of their courses. Shaw and Dukelow had their hole-in-one at Petrolia’s Kingswell Glen and Port Franks’ Sandhills respectively while Pomoransky and Matias had aces at the Forest 18-hole course and Sarnia Golf and Curling Club.

The Wyoming Wranglers have silver medals to their credit after reaching the final at an under-18 baseball tournament last weekend in Kincardine.

Wyoming beat the host team, London, Stayner and Kitchener in the preliminary round. They blanked Barrie, 1-0 in the semi-finals but lost to Ancaster in the final.

The Corunna Giants won the 13U Summer Kick-Off tournament in Thorold last weekend.

The Giants stood tall going undefeated and outscoring their opposition, 55-13.

The Giants beat Ingersoll, 14-2 to reach the final and then downed the Pelham Panthers, 16-6 in the championship contest.

The Sarnia Brigade ran the table in the U14 division to capture a championship at the Royal City Crown Classic in Guelph.

They won five straight contests including a 12-1 win over the host team in the semi-finals and an 8-4 decision against East York
in the final.

The Brigade scored 71 runs over the course of the weekend while only allowing 10 runs against.

The Camlachie Athletic Association officially opened its latest diamond in the Plympton-Wyoming community on Monday evening.

“This diamond is more than just a field,” said the CAA in a prepared statement. “It is a symbol of community, teamwork, and the love of baseball that brings us all together.

Wyoming’s Noah Myers went yard for the first time this season with Montgomery Biscuits late last week. He stroked an opposite field home run in a loss to Biloxi on Thursday.

After being placed on the IL and a rehab assignment in Florida, Myers rejoined the Biscuits late last month.

Declan Watson has won a silver medal at the Canadian Junior Weightlifting Championships in Quebec.

The Errol Village resident and Northern student had a 127-kilo snatch and 150-kilo clean and jerk in the men’s 85-kilo weight class last weekend.

With the second-place finish, Watson qualifies to represent Canada at the Junior Pan Am championships in Mexico in October.

Alan Letang will be behind the bench in the top Austrian pro hockey league this coming season.

The former Sarnia Sting player and head coach was recently hired as head coach of EC Red Bull Salzburg in the ICE Hockey
League after a short stint last season with a second division team in Germany.

The Sting fired him last November.

Red Bull has won four of the last five league championships and overall is a 10-time champion.

The Red Bull roster includes Sarnia native Nash Nienhuis.
