OSHL reviewing a hit that ended the Killer Bees-Squires game

The Ontario Super Hockey League will review a hit which sent Alvinston Killer Bees’ defenceman Jacob Chantler to hospital.

Saturday night, the so-called Battle of Lambton between the Killer Bees and Petrolia Squires ended abruptly when the Killer Bees left the ice with 12:07 left in the third period on what was billed as Minor Hockey Night.

Trailing the Squires 2-0 in the third, Nathan Mater of the Squires checked Chantler from behind into the boards near the penalty box as the referees looked on. There was no penalty called.

Chantler was taken from the arena by Lambton EMS and transported to Bluewater Health in Sarnia where he was treated and released.

“We want to thank the team medical staff and local first responders that came to his aid during this traumatic time for Jacob, his family, his teammates and Bees fans. Jacob will be out of the line-up indefinitely and we wish him a speedy recovery,” said the Bees President Dan Cumming in a written statement.

“We’d like to thank fans for their concern and well-wishes and also thank the members of the Petrolia Squires Executive who provided assistance in clearing a path for EMS at the time of the incident.”

Cummings declined any further comment until a league review of the play scheduled for Monday night.

The live feed from the game panned away from the action on the ice when it became clear Chantler was injured. Broadcasters said he was taken to the bench where paramedics found him and took him from the arena.

On the ice meantime, the play-by-play announcers said, Killer Bees player Jack Vanboekel was arguing with the referees about the play which sent Chantler to hospital and the lack of call.

Bees Coach Joe Rombouts also got into the heated discussion and was given a delay of game penalty at the 12:07. Garbage cans were tossed on the ice and the Killer Bees left, ending the game.
