Elliott wins gold, five other Lambton athletes medal at OFSAA Track and Field Championships

On a sizzling day in St. Catharines, Kallee Elliott leapt a personal best 1.61 meters to claim the gold medal in Novice Girls high jump at the OFSAA Track and Field Championships.

Elliott cleared her first three jumps of the day with ease. That brought her to 1.55 meters where she had to work for it. The LCCVI jumper couldn’t get over the bar on her first two attempts but she found her form on the final attempt and cleared the bar.

Elliott had no trouble when they moved to 1.58 meters, getting over on her first try. She was one of two competitors to clear that mark and move up to 1.61 meters.

At that height Elliott failed on her first attempt but sailed over the bar on her second try. Her last remaining competitor couldn’t get over, giving Elliott her first career OFSAA gold medal.

It was a new personal best for her with the previous high mark coming a couple weeks back at SWOSSAA when she jumped 1.60 meters.

Jaylen Helps kept the podium finishes coming for LCCVI by winning a bronze medal in Novice Girls javelin later in the afternoon.

Helps’ best throw was her first one, tossing the javelin 33.10 meters, which put her into third position.

She was consistent with her next four throws going longer than 30 meters. She was one of two athletes who had five throws that went 30+ meters.

The Lambton athletes continued to have success in the throwing events with a pair of Great Lakes athletes winning medals.

Mooretown’s Camryn Leitch claimed silver in Junior Girls discus while Mikian Teao won bronze in Junior Boys shot put.

Leitch vaulted into second place with a 35.90 meter throw on her final attempt. That toss was nearly three meters farther than what she put up at the OFSAA West Regional.

Teao’s best toss came in the preliminary round when he sent it 16.49 meters. It was a familiar result for Teao as the top four finishers at OFSAA mirrored the top four finishers at the OFSAA West Regional last week.

Over on the track, St. Pat’s won a pair of medals with Chase Capes taking home the title in the Senior Boys 1500 meter and Cylver Worton grabbing a silver medal in Novice Girls 80 meter hurdles.

Capes beat the field by nearly five seconds in his race while Worton was one of two runners to finish her race in under 12 seconds.

Plenty of local products secured top twelve finishes in their events.

Kole Chapman of LCCVI was fifth in the Senior Boys 110 meter hurdles, Arie Roelands of North Lambton came ninth in Junior Boys pole vault, Camlachie’s Keala Pickard of St. Pat’s finished 11th in the Junior Girls 1500 meter, Cate Browne of St. Pat’s was fourth in Junior Girls shot put, Skarlit Worton of Northern finished sixth in the Senior Girls 100 meter hurdles, Taylor Ysebaert of St. Pat’s claimed sixth in Senior Girls triple jump, Tayvin Young of Northern crossed the line ninth in the Junior Boys 1500 meter, and Avery Norland of St. Pat’s finished ninth in the Senior Girls 1500 meter.

St. Pat’s finished Junior Girls 4 x 100 meter relay team finished fourth, only six one-hundreths of a second behind the bronze medalists.

In the Junior Boys 4 x 100 meter relay Northern and St. Pat’s were neck and neck. St. Pat’s finished sixth and Northern came in seventh.

The final day of the OFSAA track and field championships begins at 9:00 am on Saturday morning.
