LCCVI’s Jaylen Helps and Mooretown’s Camryn Leitch both secured their second medal of the OFSAA Track and Field Championships on Saturday in St. Catharines.

Helps claimed a bronze medal in Novice Girls discus with a season’s best throw. It was the second consecutive day she won bronze after taking home that medal in Novice Girls javelin on Friday.

Helps’ first throw of the day surpassed her season’s best mark of 27.83 meters that she set at the OFSAA West Regional in Cambridge last week.

Her throws kept going farther as the competition went on with her second attempt nearly going 29 meters, which would be good enough to qualify for the final.

Helps improved on that mark on her first attempt in the final but faulted on her next attempt, putting her in sixth heading to the last throw.

She vaulted into third place with her final throw, eclipsing the 30 meter mark for the first time this season with a throw of 32.07 meters.

The success in the throwing events continued for Lambton schools with Mooretown’s Camryn Leitch winning gold in javelin for the second consecutive year.

Leitch took the lead on her second throw of the day, launching her javelin 36.32 meters. She extended her lead in the final with a toss of 37.98 meters and sent it 38.36 meters on her final attempt.

The Great Lakes thrower won the Junior Girls event by over four meters.

St. Pat’s runner Chase Capes added to his OFSAA medal collection by winning silver in the Senior Boys 3000 meter with four-time Canadian Olympian Mohammed Ahmed watching.

Capes had to pick up his pace in this race, finishing in 8:19.56, which was over 14 seconds faster than he ran at the OFSAA West Regional.

Nine other Lambton athletes posted a top ten finish in their event.

Sophie Smith of Great Lakes finished fourth in Junior Girls javelin, Avery Norland placed fourth in the Senior Girls 3000 meter, Liam Hackett of LCCVI crossed the line fifth in the Novice Boys 300 meter hurdles, Keala Pickard of St. Pat’s finished fifth in the Junior Girls 3000 meter, Caden Kreeft placed fifth in Junior Boys javelin, Nolan McKinlay of Great Lakes came in sixth in Junior Boys javelin, Josh Smith of North Lambton finished ninth in the Boys Intellectually Impaired 800 meter, Sean Hamill of Northern placed ninth in Junior Boys javelin, and Lily Bressette of Northern finished tenth in the Senior Girls 3000 meter.

In other results:

Lambton-Kent’s Anthony Hopkins placed 13th in Novice Boys discus, Tayvin Young of Northern finished 16th in the Junior Boys 800 meter, Lily Odolphy of Northern finished 17th in the Senior Girls 200 meter, Lila Knight of St. Pat’s placed 20th in Novice Girls 200 meter, and Liam Reynolds of Northern came in 21st in the Junior Boys 3000 meter.
