The redemption tour is complete for the London Knights.
After losing the national major junior hockey championship to the host Saginaw Spirit in heartbreaking fashion last season, the London Knights hoisted the Memorial Cup trophy Sunday in Rimouski, Quebec beating the Western Hockey League champion Medicine Hat Tigers, 4-1 in the final.
Easton Cowan, whose father Chris played with the then Petrolia Jets in the late 1990’s, was chosen as tournament MVP.
Watford’s Evan Van Gorp was on the ice for London’s opening goal by Jacob Julien midway through the first period and made a couple of potential goal scoring feeds in the final frame.
It is the third Memorial Cup championship for brothers Dale and Mark Hunter of Oil Springs as coach and general manager of the team and the second for Oil Springs’ product and Lambton Jr. Sting grad Rick Steadman as an assistant coach.
London becomes the fourth team since 1972 to win three national championships joining the Cornwall Royals, Kamloops Blazers and Windsor Spitfires.
Warwick Mayor Todd Case paid tribute to Van Gorp’s accomplishment Monday.
“I would like to, on behalf of the community, congratulate Evan and all his teammates for winning the Memorial Cup.
“I did have a chance to do some texting with his father today, with Mike Van Gorp. We’re going to put together a community celebration to honour hockey accomplishments, as well as the London Knights,” he said.
