Cattlebarons win Western Counties title

The Wyoming Cattlebarons has tuned up for the defence of its OBA Senior AA title with a 9-4 win over Port Lambton Sunday winning the Western Counties senior baseball playoff tournament.

Mitch Robb’s two-run single in the sixth inning key a six-run inning to break a 3-3 tie. Robb and Daniel Gibson each had three hits for the Cattlebarons. Drew Pepper had a trio of hits, including a two-run double, for the Pirates.

Warren Boersma went 5.2 innings for the win. Greg Hay took the loss. Corey Saunders came on in relief for Wyoming to nail down the victory, including getting out of a late bases loaded jam.

Wyoming advanced to the final with a 3-2 win over Corunna in the semi-finals while Port Lambton beat Dresden, 20-19 in a slugfest in the other semi final, both on Sunday morning. Dresden downed Chatham, 10-6 in the quarter finals and Corunna blanked Petrolia, 15-0.

Wyoming will host the Senior AA tournament for the second year in a row from August 22-24 while Corunna and Port Lambton will represent the league at the B and C tournaments in Leamington and Port Hope respectively.

After winning the OBA Senior C title last year, Dresden was to have played in the B tournament in Leamington this year but a clerical error will not allow the Bulls to participate.
