Warwick asks residents to speak up about landfill odour

October 24, 2025

Heather Wright/The Independent

Warwick Township is urging residents to speak up if it stinks.

The township says over the summer there has been “ongoing odour issues” coming from the Twin Creeks landfill “that are affecting the quality of life for many residents.”

Mayor Todd Case said there have been a growing number of complaints, particularly in July and August, about the smell emanating from the north. Case says the smell still lingers even as the weather is turning cooler.

So the township is asking residents with issues to file formal complaint to Waste Management, which owns Twin Creeks.

“We’ve also heard frustration from residents who feel their concerns are being dismissed when complaints are filed, especially as WM moves through the Environmental Assessment process for its proposed landfill expansion. Many have raised concerns not only about odours, but also dust, debris on local roads, truck traffic, and noise,” township officials said in a community notice. “These complaints are critical to ensure the Ministry has a clear understanding of the day-to-day impacts on our community.”

The township is also getting complaints about dust and debris on the roads as well as the truck traffic.

There have also been noise complaints about the landfill.

Township officials say people should file formal complaints each time the smell is bothering them and say they have to make sure they say it is a formal complaint.

In the past, WM officials have said the number of odour complaints has decreased over time.
