On a night where the team honoured long-time supporter Jack Fox, the Petrolia Squires skated away with a 6-5 win over the Tillsonburg Thunder in Ontario Elite Hockey League action at Greenwood Friday.
The father-in-law of retired Squires coach Brad Wright and the grandfather of former Squires player Kraig Wright, Fox passed away last week at the age of 83.
On the ice, Blake Butler registered his first career senior hockey hat trick and added an assist to lead the hometown team to victory.
Corey Pawley added a goal and two assists while Zach VanEyk and Adam Craievich also scored for Petrolia. Ryan Barwitzki had three assists.
Nolan DeKoning turned aside 36 shots for his second win of the season in the Petrolia net.
The Squires had period leads of 2-1 and 4-2 and increased their lead to 6-3 in the final frame before the visitors scored twice in the final three-and-a-half minutes.
Petrolia is now 7-2 on the season and in second place in the South Conference. The team is two points behind Seaforth with a game in hand.
The Squires host Dunville Friday at 8:30 pm.
