Sorry Kicky McSoccerface: Petrolia names new soccer pitch Tank Street Heritage Field

Sorry Kicky McSoccerface, the new Petrolia soccer pitches will have a more traditional name.

Petrolia council has chosen Tank Street Heritage Field after asking residents to help choose a name for the new pitches.

In a report to council, Julie Bullock, director of parks and recreation, said there were 103 different names submitted by the public, including some unusual ones.

Kicky McSoccerface and A Waste of Taxpayers Money!! were two of the more non-traditional choices. Many suggestions leaned on the oil heritage of Petrolia for names such as Tank Turf, Pumpjack Park, Tar Heels Field and The Oilmen’s Field.

Others leaned into historic people suggesting Arthur Park, to commemorate the visit of Prince Arthur, son of queen Victoria and Canada’s 10th governor general and John D. Noble Park to honour the man who first pioneered the use of oil storage tanks in the area protecting the community from fires. He lived on the street.

That name was favoured by Councillor Liz Welsh, who is on the Petrolia Heritage Committee.

She conceded to let the committee educate people about John D. Noble and instead suggested Tank Street Heritage Park. “Tank Street gets very little recognition and it is an important street in the history of Petrolia.”

Deputy Mayor Joel Field suggested a slight change. “Not that I’m trying to get my last name involved…we should consider putting Field in there” to make it clear its just the soccer pitches.

Council agreed.
