SPORTS BRIEFS: Burns heading to Windsor

Enniskillen Township’s Rachel Burns has signed with the University of Windsor on a track scholarship.
The St. Pat’s student will join the Lancers’ throwing team. Burns won a silver medal at OFSSA in 2024, her first year throwing shot put.

Third period goals by Liam Nickerson and Case VanSingel were not enough for the Sarnia Legionnaires in a 3-2 loss to the Kings in Komoka Saturday. Sarnia is now 0-37 on the GOHL season. It is the third time this season the Legionnaires has lost to Komoka by a singe goal. The Legionnaires entertain Chatham this Thursday at Pat Stapleton Arena and then take on the Stars in St. Thomas on Friday.

The Alvinston Ice Angels Elementary team are the proud owners of gold medals for taking top honours in their division at the Skate Ontario Synchro Series in Kingston last weekend. Their skate was described as “absolutely outstanding.” The Ice Angels Star 8 Pre-Novice also competed at the same competition. Their performance was described as “solid, focused and determined.”

The LKSSAA high school winter sports season is scheduled to resume next Monday, Feb. 2. The coming week will include boys and girls hockey and curling, girls volleyball and boys basketball. The season, notwithstanding rescheduled games postponed due to recent inclement weather, is scheduled to end on Feb. 23.

The Dale Kelly rink successfully defended its championship with a win over Mark Bice’s foursome in the final of the 95th edition of the Imperial Bonspiel Sunday at Sarnia Golf and Curling Club.
The Kelly team from the host club, and with ties to Forest, also included Gary Pitre, Don Bourque, and Jared Bourque. The long-standing event included 30 teams from Ontario and Michigan.

Mike Weir had five birdies and a bogey in his final round 68 to finish in a tie for 15th place at the season opening tournament on the Champions Tour.
He opened the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai with a 66 last Thursday and carded a 71, including a triple bogey on number 13, on Friday.
His 11 under score earned him $34,000.
